Working in a team is a must in the software development process. It is not a job that can be done alone by yourself. You need to collaborate with your team to develop the software. To be honest, during the development process, not only the software is developed, but the man behind the process also
Talking about collaboration leads to interaction and relationships among the team members. In a team, the relationship will impact the way team members communicate with each other. Examples of a good relationship are there are no hesitate to ask for help and remind for mistake among the team members.
In my project, there are few tips to establish and enhance the relationship in your development team.
Know Each Other
The first step in making a relationship is to introduce yourself to each other. You can start it with share your hobbies, favorite music, jokes, or anything that seems fun to talk about.
This is my first online meeting with my development team; Andhika Yusup, Ari Nugraha, Iqrar Agalosi and Adrian Wijaya. Unfortunately, we can not meet directly due to covid-19. Ari and Iqrar lived in West Sumatra, Andhika lived in Sukabumi and Adrian lived in Jambi. This is an interesting experience where all communication and work in our team are held online.
In the first meeting, we share about our self, our activity during the semester, our experience and speciality, and sometimes talk about strange things. At that time, we decided on each team member’s role in software development.
I trust my team and respectively they trust me. Each team member has their own role and responsibilities.
All Together
Try to waste time together with your team. By doing it, your team will know more about each other. I believe that there is no relationship without experiences spent together. The more interaction the team has, the more bond is built.
Covid-19 is a pandemic that changes the way we interact with each other. Thanks to technology, we able to use online calls and meetings to communicate with each other. Actually, that is not an obstacle, but a challenge for us to be able more creatively.
Here things you can do to improve relation even in pandemic conditions,
- Play online board games, like Uno, chess, monopoly, etc.
- Watch a movie.
- Study together.
- Make a sharing time. Here you can talk about your problems, achievement, anything.
Help Each Other
The team goals can not be achieved by one individual, it is teamwork. All team members have their own expertise and weakness. In the end, your teammate’s obstacle will affect the development process. The team needs to be motivated to help each other. That what is called working as a team. Treat your teams like you treat yourself!
Even if you can’t help your teammates overcome hurdles. You can offer other solutions, such as your friend or someone you know who can solve your teammate’s problem. I help you and you help me too. I think that is the mindset that should have among the development team.
Understand your team
Understand your team is about ‘empathy’. Empathy is the ability to understand other people’s feelings. It’s more than just sensing other people’s feelings and emotions but also taking a genuine interest in them and their concerns.
Advice for you to understand your team better,
- Pick up emotional cues, from the body language, tone of voice or other non-verbal elements of communication.
- Listen well to what people saying, actively checking their understanding. ‘when people talk, listen completely. Most people never listen’
- Show sensitivity towards others. They are careful not to offend by saying or doing the wrong thing, aware that not everyone has the same point of view.
